We have all heard the adage, An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Few take it seriously or understand the reasoning behind these words of wisdom. Here are some nutritional facts about apples.
WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT AN APPLE?
An apple is a natural diuretic, it aids in urine production. Diuretics help the body to flush out toxins and break down fat. Apples have nutrients which aid in tonifying the muscles and nerves. It has micro-nutrients that support desirable intestinal flora. Apples have oxalic and malic acid that help whiten teeth and cleanse the blood. An apple is a natural remedy for diarrhea and its pectin absorbs toxins and removes them from the body.
Each variety of apple will vary in nutritional value. The nutrition facts reflect generalized values for a raw apple including the skin and reflect the percent daily value based on a 2,000 calorie diet: Calories 65 per serving size equal to 1 cup or 125 grams. Vitamins A 1%, C 10%, Calcium 1%, Iron 1%, Fat less than 65 grams. Saturated fat less than 20 grams, Cholesterol less than 300 milligrams, Sodium less than 2,400 milligrams, Total Carbohydrates 300 grams, Fiber 25 grams. Nutrition facts that appear on food labels do not show the full complement of macro and micro-nutrients of a food. The information provided on a nutrition label is required by law. Any one food has many, many micro-nutrients. All are important to body function.
Looking a little deeper into the nutritional value for an apple we find the following information based on one medium apple with skin contains: Calories 95, Fiber 4.4 grams, Protein 0.47 grams, Potassium 195 milligrams, Calcium 11 milligrams, Phosphorus 20 milligrams, Magnesium 9 millligrams, Manganese 0.064 milligrams, Iron 0.22 milligrams, Sodium 2 milligrams, Copper 0.049 milligrams, Zinc 0.07 milligrams, and many other trace amounts of minerals. Vitamins include: Vitamin A 98 International Units, VitaminB1 (thiamine) 0.031 milligrams, Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) 0.047 milligrams, Niacin 0.166 milligrams, Folate 5 micrograms, Panthohenic Acid 0.111 milligrams, Vitamin B6 0.0075 milligrams, Vitamin C 8.4 milligrams, Vitamin E 0.33 milligrams, Vitamin K 4 micrograms, and there are numerous other vitamins in trace amounts.
Metabolic Balance is a food-based program designed to help the body detox and restore balance which in turns helps us lose weight, or gain weight, and improve our health. Metabolic Balance recognizes the importance of apples in the diet and has a one apple a daily requirement for participants. It is one of the 8 rules of the program. Apples can be eaten raw, cooked, as well as included as an ingredient in a recipe. No specific variety of apple is specified. If a participant has an allergy to apples, it is recommended to try different varieties of heirloom apples. The thought is that an heirloom apple has undergone less breeding and modifications and can be tolerated by most. Cooking an apple by lightly steaming it can also reduce allergic reactions.
