Reboot Your Mental Game – Overcoming Emotional Obstacles in Weight Loss

anacardiumTHERE ARE MANY REASONS NOT TO SUCCEED AT A WEIGHT LOSS PLAN

Have you ever tried to stick to a meal plan but have not been able to? Perhaps you want to lose weight to look and feel better. Maybe you need to lose weight for health reasons. You just can’t. It may seem too complicated or too bothersome.

Food is necessary for life. It is necessary to live. It is a way to celebrate with friends. Food can be an addiction. Food can be a way to hide feelings. Is it stress eating or something else?

THERE ARE PHYSICAL REASONS FOR OVEREATING

Stress can bring on increased levels of cortisol, known as “the stress hormone.” Cortisol has a beneficial function in the body, but excessive levels of cortisol can cause many of problems in the body. Among other things, high levels of cortisol can create cravings for salty and sweet foods.

There can be other imbalances, such as yeast overgrowth, that can also cause cravings for sweets.

EMOTIONAL OR STRESS EATING

When stressed or anxious, many people become “orally fidgety.” Sometimes this leads to nail biting or teeth grinding, and often it leads to eating when not hungry. Many people, out of nervousness or boredom, just munch on chips or drink soda to give their mouths something to do.

SOCIAL EATING IS NOT ALWAYS CELEBRATORY

Many people seek refuge in social settings when under stress. Some seek consolation on a friend’s shoulder over a couple of hot fudge sundaes or a plate full of fried appetizers.

OLD HABITS

Many have comforting childhood memories that revolve around food. Whether sweets were given as a reward or given as a way to distract one from boo-boos, or as a way to celebrate successes. It would be difficult to find someone who doesn’t have emotionally-based attachments to food while growing up.
