Social Networking: Using Facebook Safely

IS YOUR LIFE AN OPEN (FACE)BOOK?

It seems like everyone is Facebooking, tweeting, blogging or getting LinkedIn® these days. Social networks are great tools for keeping in touch with friends, family and colleagues; but think twice about how you use them and what you’re telling people online about yourself.

WATCH WHAT YOU SHARE

A recent survey finds that millions of Americans share key items of identity information through social networks. For example, nearly 70 million people include their birthplace on their profiles. Bad idea! Birthplace is one of the most common security questions that financial institutions ask when verifying identity. The more pieces of the identity jigsaw puzzle that you share, the easier it is for fraudsters to complete your ID picture.

SHARE VACATION MEMORIES – NOT PLANS

Telling friends about your upcoming vacation plans lets potential burglars know when your home will be vacant. Share information about trips or events after you’ve returned home.

WATCH YOUR WORDS

Be careful what you tweet or post online about others – and warn your children about their posts and tweets. Ill-advised comments could leave your family open to libel or harassment suits.
