Many prepared sauces and prepared seasoning mixes contain artificial ingredients. Even the natural ones.
IS IT ORGANIC?
When a product is labeled organic, it really means that it is 95-99% organic. Ingredients other than the main ingredient do not need to be organic.
When it comes to plants, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines organic as plants that are grown in soils that are not treated with pesticides or herbicides for at least 3 years. Additionally none of the plants can be grown from genetically modified seeds (GMO).
ISN’T NATURAL OK?
Please be aware that the US Department of Food and Agriculture (FDA) has no standard for “natural.” The reality is monosodium glutamate (MSG) is considered a natural ingredient. “Natural flavorings” or “natural ingredients” can be proprietary blends of chemicals or substances that are not necessarily healthy.
ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION
Metabolic balance® cautions about the use of commercial sauces and seasoning mixes at least in the beginning phases of the program. Sometimes additives and flavorings, even the natural ones, can be the cause of undesirable symptom. Symptoms such as digestive disorders, joint pain, skin disorders, sinus or breathing difficulties, and even interference with sleep.
Metabolic balance® helps the body detox, relying on the body’s own ability to eliminate toxins. Adding a substance into the diet that is potentially problematic is counter productive the goal.
DOES THAT MEAN BLAND FOOD?
Absolutely not! There are countless ways to season food without packaged sauces or seasoning mixes. One way is to make your own.
Here is a delicious recipe for mustard. Seasonings can be adjusted to suit individualized tastes either by adding more or less or substituting something else.
MUSTARD RECIPE
• 6 tablespoons mustard seeds (1 tablespoon yellow and 1 tablespoon brown mustard seeds)
• 1/2 cup mustard powder
• 3 tablespoons apple cider or balsamic vinegar
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
• 2 teaspoons sea salt
• One 6-inch cinnamon stick
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS
• 2 tablespoons grated fresh horseradish
• 1/4 cup minced fresh herbs (really any kind)
• 1 clove minced garlic
PREPARE
1. Grind mustard seeds in a spice grinder, coffee grinder or with a mortar and pestle. The seeds should be coarsely ground.
2. Pour in a mixing bowl add the mustard powder, red pepper, salt and any of the optional ingredients.
3. Add water and vinegar and stir the ingredients.
4. Place the whole cinnamon stick.
5. Cover and set aside for 24 hours.
6. Remove and discard the cinnamon stick.
Spoon into sterilized jar(s). Mustard will last several months if refrigerated.
