WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE GREEN DISHWASHER DETERGENT & RINSE AID
Here is a simple and economical recipe you can make yourself.
INGREDIENTS
• 2 cups of Borax
• 2 cups of Baking Soda
• 4 small packets of sugar-free lemonade Kool-Aid (you can also use 4 tablespoons of citric acid–if you can find it)
MIX & USE & STORE
Mix everything together by either dumping into a big bowl and stirring it really well or dumping it into a container with a lid and shaking it up. You can keep it in your lidded container or re-use your old detergent box.
NATURAL DISHWASHER RINSE AID
• White Vinegar
Use 2 tablespoons per load. (1 tablespoon in the open cup and 1 in the closed locking cup)
Pour some White Vinegar into your rinse aid receptacle and your glasses will come out sparkling! (If your dishes end up covered with a white residue, you probably have hard water and need to experiment with the amount of Borax to use.) Just fill the rinse aid dispenser with the vinegar. If you don’t have a dispenser then add three tablespoons to each load.
ECONOMICAL SOAP FOR YOUR DISHWASHER
This batch of dishwashing soap cost me about 65 cents to make and it will last for about 100 loads of dishes. Takes less than 5min to make! Do your part. Help protect your health, your family’s health and save our environment. Share this recipe with your friends and family.
NATURAL INGREDIENTS ARE HEALTHIER
Besides the economical benefit, using natural cleaning agents can be healthier. It is believed that the chemical ingredients in many household cleaners and personal care products can be harmful to the environment, wildlife, as well as your body. These ingredients include acetone, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, butylated hydroxyanisole, camphor, diethanolamine, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde, linalool, parabens, phthalates, triclosan.
Many of these chemicals will pass through the treatment process and enter local waters after being flushed down toilets, rinsed down sinks, or washed off people and clothing. Something you may not know is these chemicals pass through your skin as toxins and can have a negative affect on your health. Many skin diseases, allergies, and asthma are caused or exacerbated by an underlying sensitivity to these chemicals.
MORE YOU CAN DO
• Be a wise shopper. Look for products made with natural ingredients and avoid products that use chemicals like those mentioned above. Unfortunately, this isn’t easy; many personal care products do not list all of their ingredients. The good news is that there are healthy alternatives. Visit The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep project.
• Do not pour or flush unwanted personal care products down the drain, toilet, or storm drain.
• Dispose of personal care products as you would any other toxic chemicals. Bring them to a household hazardous waste collection facility. Check with local utilities or public works department to learn about the best way to dispose of personal care products, oil, paint, solvents, other household hazardous wastes as well as other materials.
