A LEGAL VICTORY AGAINST CENSORSHIP BY THE FDA
It is refreshing to see reports like this one.
A company selling green tea leaves wanted to state on its label that, “green tea may prevent prostate and breast cancer.”
OK TO STATE GREEN TEA’S PROVEN HEALTH BENEFIT
In spite of many published studies that have shown a protective effect of green tea against common cancers, the FDA insisted that the claim also contain the following statement, “The FDA does not agree that green tea may reduce the risk because there is very little scientific evidence for the claim.”
A US District Court ruled that by forcing the company to put a negative statement on its label, the ability of the health information to be communicated was effectively negated. The judge ordered the FDA to draft an accurate disclaimer that does not nullify the cancer prevention claim altogether.
METABOLIC BALANCE & HEALTH CLAIMS
When selecting foods for ourselves and our families it is important to understand the difference between the actual nutritional benefit of the foods we eat and marketing claims. Some claims provide accurate health information, while others are not. Some of what I cover in the classes for my clients participating in my metabolic balance® program is to understand the difference. We learn how to read a nutrition label and to recognize additives and ingredients and how they work for and against our health.
