Is there a connection between food and mood? Absolutely! Our mood is stimulated by certain neurotransmitters and it all starts in the gut.
WHAT IS A NEUROTRANSMITTER?
A neurotransmitter is a chemical messenger that carries, boosts and modulates signals between neurons and other cells in the body. The micronutrients and macronutrients in our food are chemicals that feed neurotransmitters. Without the proper nutrition, neurotransmitters don’t function properly.
SEROTONIN AND SLEEP
Let’s look at the neurotransmitter, serotonin, as an example. Too little serotonin can increase appetite for carbohydrates (starchy foods) and trouble sleeping. It is also associated with depression and other emotional disorders and been tied to migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, and fibromyalgia.
KEEPING BLOOD SUGAR BALANCED
Combining the right carbohydrates and proteins enhances the availability of serotonin in the brain. Eating a diet that has the right mix of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients keeps the body fueled and blood sugar level on an even keel.
Studies on nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, tryptophan, folate and other B vitamins that occur in low glycemic foods show an association with improved mood in general. Here is some information on neurotransmitters in food and their effect on mood.
