What “HPUS” Stands For

What does hpus meanHPUS

When a client receives their homeopathic remedy, I am often asked, “What does ‘HPUS’ stand for?”

Often the letters HPUS are printed on a label near the name of the homeopathic remedy. It sometimes looks as if it is part of the name of the remedy. But it is not. HPUS are the initials of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States.

The confusion is easy to understand. The names of the homeopathic remedies look unfamiliar as they are in Latin. The Latin name of the remedy is used because Latin is a universal scientific standard.

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES ARE PREPARED UNDER FDA GUIDELINES

Homeopathic remedies are specially prepared by a homeopathic pharmacy in the United States in accordance with FDA-approved guidelines. Homeopathic remedies have had legal status in the United States since 1897; that’s over 115 years.

NO ONE-STOP SHOPPING FOR HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

There are almost 4,000 homeopathic remedies in many different strengths, called potencies. Not every pharmacy has all of the remedies or the potencies that are needed. Fortunately, there are many homeopathic pharmacies offering a wide variety of remedies in different preparations. Some of the pharmacies I rely on are Boiron, Hahnemann Laboratories Inc., OHM Pharma Inc.Natural Health Supply, and Standard Homeopathic Labs.

Standard Homeopathic Labs carries products under several labels including, Treatment Options Homeopathic Labs, 1-800-Homeopathy, and Hyland’s.

Boiron and Hyland’s brands are most commonly found in retail stores such as natural foods stores, health food stores, some grocery stores, and traditional pharmacies. Boiron is easy to recognize because remedies are packaged in small blue tubes displayed in vertical rows.

CAN CLIENTS PURCHASE THEIR OWN REMEDIES?

Clients are welcome to purchase their own remedies. However, sometimes this does not work out as intended. Often a well-meaning store clerk will not be familiar with a particular remedy and offer a substitute product which is not correct for the situation. Other times clients tell me they cannot find the correct remedy after an exhaustive search. In the end, time, energy, and money are saved if I order the remedy for the client or provide it from my stock. This is especially true if the client is not feeling well to start with.

HOMEOPATHY REMEDY KITS

I encourage clients to purchase remedy kits. Kits are available for first aid, home care, office care, pet care, or one for travel. I keep a list of the remedies clients have. It is useful in an acute situation to know what a client has access to. I can order kits for clients or give the client options on where to purchase kits. I can also help a client determine which are the remedies they would most likely need for their situation.
