WHAT DOES YOUR WAIST MEASUREMENT HAVE TO DO WITH YOUR HEALTH?
According to the National Library of of Medicine’s PubMed Health, one of the most important risk factors for metabolic syndrome is an apple-shaped body as opposed to a pear-shaped body.
WHAT IS METABOLIC SYNDROME?
Metabolic syndrome is a collection of conditions that indicate if a person is at risk for health problems and chronic disease such as Diabetes Type II, heart disease, and stroke. These conditions include large waist, a BMI greater than 25, abnormal cholesterol levels, high blood sugar, insulin intolerance, high blood pressure. The American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute states that if a person has at least 3 of these conditions that person is at risk for metabolic syndrome.

What is considered a large waist? A woman with a waistline 35 inches are more is at risk for metabolic syndrome. A man with a waistline over 40 inches is at risk.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR WAIST
To measure your waist correctly, stand and place a tape measure around your waist at your navel. This is called your waist circumference. Measure your waist just after you exhale.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE WAIST THAT IS TOO LARGE?
A small weight loss, as little as 5% of your current weight, will help to lower your risk of heart disease and other serious health problems. The best way to take off pounds is to do so slowly, by getting more exercise and eating a balanced diet that is low in calories and includes healthy fats.
A waistline that is too small is also at risk for chronic disease as well.
WAIST TO HEIGHT RATIO
Here are guidelines for a healthy waist circumference to height ratio or WHtR. WHtR is another measure for risk of metabolic syndrome.
WHtR By Age | 15 Years and Under | Up to 40 Years* | Over 50 Years |
Too Small | WHtR < 34 | WHtR < 40 | WHtR < 40 |
Ideal | WHtR = 34 – 45 | WHtR = 40 – 50 | WHtR = 40 – 60 |
Too Large | WHtR > 45 | WHtR > 51 | WHtR > 61 |
* Between the age of 40 and 50, the WHtR value may increase by 1 increment per year.
