Regaining Balance after Hormonal Birth Contraceptives

When it comes to birth control, hormonal contraceptives (HCs) are often preferred by many women. This approach can regulate an unruly cycle, produce little or no menstrual cycle and control PMS symptoms, and it may seem like the carefree choice for couples when it comes to family planning. Yet HCs are not without consequences to the health and wellness of many women.

Common side effects while taking HCs include decreased libido, mood swings, depression, anxiety, nausea, dizziness, headaches, breast tenderness, acne, circulation problems, tumors and cancers. HCs do not protect women against sexually transmitted diseases. Unfortunately, some side effects don’t stop when a woman stops taking the pill.

A women’s endocrine system is a complex system of glands: the pituitary hypothalamus, thymus, pineal gland, ovaries, thyroid, adrenals, parathyroid and pancreas. These glands work together to secrete hormones to almost every cell, organ and function of our bodies to regulate mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, sexual function and the reproductive process.

HCs are artificial hormones and their introduction to the body can create long-term disruption in a woman’s delicate balance. Women are often left with irregular cycles. They can develop fibroids, have difficulty conceiving and often acquire thyroid or adrenal dysfunctions.

An integrative approach using natural medicines can help restore a woman’s own natural balance. Each woman’s body has a unique cycle, rhythm and balance, and no two women are alike. Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine that incorporates minute doses of natural substances that have been prepared in a special way to work with the whole person. Homeopathy recognizes that each woman’s body is as individual as her personality. A well-chosen remedy will correct a person’s chemical imbalances in the reproductive system and in the stress response. Under good homeopathic care, a woman will respond better to stress, and her hormones will come into balance naturally.

HCs are often used for other reasons than to prevent pregnancy. They can be used to control symptoms such as irregular, painful or heavy menstrual cycles; PMS; acne; emotional ups and downs; or endometriosis. Homeopathic practitioners recommend trying natural methods of restoring balance and alleviating these symptoms before trying HCs, which can have serious and harmful side effects. Homeopaths also can help women who are presently taking HCs find a suitable, natural solution without side effects.

Unlike herbs and supplements, homeopathy offers permanent relief without having to take something forever. After several months of care, many women find permanent relief and learn how to recognize their bodies’ unique needs and cues. It is best to seek a natural, holistic approach customized to each individual that uses natural therapies such as homeopathy. A simple, natural approach empowers women to take control of their health and well-being that will serve them throughout their lives.
