OMG, Ghee is Good! 

Until the start of the 3rd week of Phase 2 (the first two weeks are considered the “Strict Phase” of the metabolic balance® program) most metabolic balancers don’t know what fats/oils they are going to get on their plan. When the time comes, most are surprised and pleased to see ghee is there.

Ghee is a type of clarified butter that is a dietary source of fat traditionally used in Indian cooking. It has a rich, nutty flavor and golden color. Clarified butter is when the milk solids are removed. One benefit of clarified butter is that it can be used for cooking at a higher heat than other oils and fats.

Velda, metabolic balancer, learned a way of making ghee from a friend and wanted to share it with us. We don’t know the origin of this recipe.

Ghee Recipe

Preheat oven to 250℉.

  1. Place 1 lb. of unsalted butter in an oven-proof pan.  As the butter melts the milk solids found in the butter start to separate.  It is not so important how long it stays in the oven. 2.5 to 3 hours is good.  During the melting process the impurities rise to the surface
  2. What butter looks like after 2 hours top and begin to turn brown
  3. Once the butter is good and melted, then it is strained through cheesecloth. Removing the impurities leaves a beautiful translucent golden liquid which is cooled to become ghee.
  4. Pour the ghee into jars or containers with lids. May be left out or stored in the refrigerator.

OMG, Ghee is Good! Ghee has Omega-3 fatty acids; 179mg of Omega-3 fatty acids per cup. According to Ayurvedic medicine ghee is very important for its digestive properties. According to Ayurveda philosophy there are certain people who can benefit from ghee. It is thought that ghee helps to improve absorption and assimilation.  metabolic balance® plans are tailored to suit the individual needs of each metabolic balancer.

Remember, there are many fats that may be included in a metabolic balance® plan. Plans are created based on a person’s individual chemistry.  Usually during Phase 3  metabolic balancers are encouraged to try foods not on their plans and listen to their own inner signals to see if that food is a good fit for them.

If ghee is not on your plan and you would like to try ghee, you should check with your coach. If you don’t have one, find a coach.
